THE CATFLAP CHINWAG WITH...
HARD-FI
First there was Martin and Gary and now there's Steve, the latest Kemp to find fame and fortune in the music industry. The difference here, though, is that as the drummer in indie stalwarts HARD-Fi, he doesn't advertise cheap sofas and nor does he make his love on wasteground. He's not related to those berks either...
What's the worst gig you've ever played?
We did an American tour last year, and the last gig was in Seattle. It was in this big hall, where everyone had to watch the Super Bowl which was Seattle versus someone else. The plan was, there's the Super Bowl, then afterwards when it's finished Hard-Fi come on stage and everyone will come out, rock out and have a good time. But unfortunately what we didn't plan, is that Seattle got whupped. So when we got out there, apart from the people who'd come to see us, it was a bad gig. People turned up, but were so depressed they went home, or they were shouting 'f*** you, what you doing dancing about!'
Does football chanting at gigs upset you?
I don't mind it, it's all part of the show. We played Sheffield once and this was after a Sheffield derby, and that was a bit moody. Especially as Kai (bass) was so hungover from the night before that he had no idea where he was and he came on stage and said "hello Cardiff" to a crowd full of Wednesday and United fans with riot police just outside the gig.
