On this day 15 July

El Matador!

Mario Kempes: Footballing bullfighter...

Think retro Argentinian footballers, think the little fat one. But if you really want your Toffs shirt to stand out from the crowd, then go for Kempes 9 on the back. Born this very day in 1954, the man who scored 20 times in 43 international appearances was known to his loving public as "El Matador".

A quick check through our old GCSE Spanish textbooks tells us that it means The Bullfighter, which is admittedly a pretty damn cool nickname. Though not as cool as being named in Pele's top 125 greatest living footballers. Though you'd be a bit miffed not to make that list really. Apparently we came in in 123rd.

On this day in 1997, Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace is shot dead on the steps of his Miami home. Detectives trace suspect Andrew Cunanan to a houseboat three miles from the murder scene on 25 July 1997 and after a five-hour siege a swat team storms the boat and find Cunanan dead, having shot himself in the head with the gun he used to kill Versace. Any motive or clues go to the grave with him.

Meanwhile, it’s penblwydd hapus as they say in certain parts of Western England to plausible Idi Amin Forest Whitaker (47), scary reconstructed blonde Brigitte Nielsen (45) and Dutch master Rembrandt Van Rijn (looking good on it, for 402 years-old). He was a painter, by the way, not a footballer.
