On this day 22 July

Fly a Kuyt

Dirk is born...

Kort, Koit, Kite, Kurt, Koort? Just what the hell is it? However which way you pronounce his name, some of us are still trying to work out how he ever became a Premier League striker. Liverpool's star striker was born today in 1980 in Katwik aan Zee in the Netherlands, and as a youth he played for the wonderfully-named Quick Boys, before moving on to Utrecht, then Feyenoord, before his big money move to Liverpool.

In all of our in depth research undertaken on the man celebrating his 28th birthday today though, we couldn't find any account of when he fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Harsh? Sorry Dirk. Or is it Doik?

Meanwhile, away from the links, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar escaped from prison – well, when we say prison, we mean five-star luxury accommodation. On this day in 1992, OJ Simpson pleaded innocent to the murder of his ex-wife Nicole and Ronald Goldman in 1994, while in 2005 Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes was shot seven times in the head by police, who mistakenly identified him as a potential terrorist.

Som owie nek mein aryouk yrinyu! as they say in Cambodia to American artist Edward Hopper (85), funk legend George Clinton (67), dishevelled actor Rhys Ifans (39) and ultra-camp singer Rufus Wainwright (34).
