On this day 27 July

England finalists...

Bobby to the double...

Yesterday we mentioned how West Germany became the first finalists of the 1966 World Cup in England after defeating the USSR 2-1, and today it was the turn of the hosts, who defeated an impressive Portugal side by the same scoreline. Portgual were in great form coming in to the game, with their forward Eusebio putting in the type of performances that would make him a legend. But it was another footballing ledge who would overshadow him today in '66, as Bobby Charlton scored both of England's goals to send the 95,000 fans at Wembley into raptures. An 82nd minute penalty from Eusebio resulted in a nervy last eight minutes, but England hung on to set up the famous match against Germany in three days time...

Elsewhere today in in 1981, fiction met reality as Ken Barlow married Deirdre Langton in Corrie, which became a national event for reasons we still can't fathom, as an estimate 89 billion people tuned in to watch. Sorry, we've been told a million times not to exaggerate. Also today in 1996, two people were killed and others injured as a bomb exploded at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Eric Rudolph would later be given four life sentences for the crime.

It’s torson odriin mend hurgee as they say in Ulan Bator to a man you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, wrestler Triple H (39), Aussie legend Allan Border (53), and former Chilean free kick wizard and goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert (43).
