On this day 29 July

Like a Beglin...

Doctor Doom was born today...

On this day in 1963, one James Martin Beglin was born. Known to his friends as Jim, and known to the rest of the country as that miserable bastard from ITV's Champions League coverage. Kaka scores a stupendous goal? Jim blames the 'keeper. Robinho dribbles past three to create a tap in for Raul, Jim bemoans the tame defending. God knows what it must be like for the commentator beside him, spending 90 minutes alongside Doctor Doom.

For those who don't know, Jim was once a Liverpool player, making 64 appearances for the Reds. Considered one of Liverpool's best ever left backs, a horrific leg break curtailed his career. So maybe next time he says something ridiculously negative, maybe think twice before slagging him off. Then slag him off.

July 29th, 1874 and Major Walter Copton Winfield of England receives the U.S patent for the lawn tennis court. His patent for a hill of guffawing, over-optimistic buffoons was rejected although adopted by the Wimbledon Tennis Club some years later. Also on this day, in 1981, Charles and Diana walked down the aisle sparking mass hysteria and commemorative-plate-making.

Continuing in a commemorative vein it's chestit rojden den as they say in Bulgaria to former F1 champion Fernando Alonso who handily has the day off (27); Blade star Stephen Dorff (35) and double-yellow-card-loving referee Graham Poll (45).
