On this day 6 July
Baggio magic...
The divine ponytail. Really?
They called him "Il Divin Codino", but to most people with any fashion sense, there was little divine about Roberto Baggio's ponytail. It looked like someone had just scraped out the contents of Winehouse's shower plug and sneakily placed it on his back as a prank. Nonetheless, Baggio's effect on USA '94 was nothing short of divine, and today that very year he was again Italy's saviour, as an 88th minute equaliser against Nigeria took the second round tie to extra time, and then a 100th minute penalty from Baggio took Italy to the quarter finals. He would score three more goals in the tournament as he guided his side to the final, but couldn't find the net in the final. Indeed as he struck his decisive penalty in the shoot out, there weren't many using the word "divine" to describe his hairdo...
At Woolton Garden Fête, on this day in 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time. McCartney's old man told him that Lennon would "get him into trouble," but relented and allowed the Quarrymen to practice in the front room of his house. We could bang on about the respective merits of Sgt Peppers and The White Album, but all you really need to know is, had they not met, we'd have been left with Gerry and the Pacemakers and music would be a very dark and depressing place.
So grab the shisha pipe and sing Tavalodet Mobarak! as they do in Persian to the Chinese-baiting Dalai Lama (73), professional idiot George W. Bush (62), and 60-year-old commando Sly Stallone (62).
